If you have witnessed the abandonment, neglect and/or abuse of animals, and you did not know which competent institutions to report the actions to and whether they are legally punishable, the following text may help you…
ABANDONMENT OF ANIMALS
Abandoning an animal is punishable under the Animal Protection Act and must be reported to the competent veterinary inspection.
ANIMAL NEGLECT AND ABUSE
Animal neglect and abuse is also within the jurisdiction of the veterinary inspection, to which reports are submitted. These are various forms of violations of the Animal Protection Act, such as:
- keeping the dog on a very short leash
- keeping the animal in the sun without shelter and water
- various forms of neglect (failure to visit the vet, failure to treat illness, irregular food and water, inappropriate housing)
- keeping a dog in an apartment without taking it for regular walks
- hitting an animal
- animal poisoning
- cruelty to animals
📄 The application must contain:
- Description of the incident – specific details about the type of abuse or neglect
- Evidence – attach as much relevant material as possible:
- Photos and/or videos
- Witness statements
- Veterinary documentation
- Information about the complainant, perpetrator and witnesses (if available):
- First and last name
- Address
- Phone number
- Vehicle registration number (if relevant)
HOW TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION TO THE VETERINARY INSPECTION?
You must send a written report to the state inspectorate about the neglect/abuse of an animal, in which you will provide as many details as possible that point to a violation of the Animal Protection Act. Along with the application itself, it is desirable to attach as much concrete evidence as possible, such as photographs and/or video recordings, witness statements, veterinary documentation, etc.
🔒 Identity protection:
If there is a risk to the safety of the reporting party or witness, request anonymity in the report itself. The competent institutions are obliged to act in accordance with this request.
